So far for me this year, Alex Mustakis and Drayton Entertainment are 2 for 2 in the hits department!
Following up the opening of ‘Legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ a few weeks ago in Drayton, I was able to catch the production of ‘Chicago’ on now until June 27th. at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.
Honestly, I’m too lazy to go into all the detail I could about this show. There are just too many good things happening. Instead, I’m going to focus quickly on 3 or 4 of my favourites.
I’ve seen Jayme Armstrong in several roles with Drayton Entertainment and I’m such a fan. She has an immense talent. In her role as ambitious chorus girl, Roxy Hart she’s the perfect blend of kooky and charismatic; a scheming, unfaithful, murderer on death row … and you can’t help but love her.
Geoffrey Whynot plays Roxy’s hapless husband, Amos. His performance of the song ‘Mr. Cellophane’ was one of the funniest ‘awww’ moments I’ve seen in theatre in years. Picture a kitten tripping … kinda sad but so darn cute you start to laugh.
The dancing in this show is next level spectacular. While it’s hard to pick a favourite, I’m going to go with “Cell Block Tango”. It’s everything you might expect in a Bob Fosse musical: cheeky, energetic and sexy.
Drayton Entertainment has raised the bar again. See this one if you can.
Not recommended for young children.
