Beyond The Scores – October 21, 2015

The Jays are hanging by a thread after losing dismally to the Royals last night, 14-2.  They went through 6 pitchers to try and stop the bleeding, but perhaps the most interesting part of the game involved the last pitcher they brought in.  I was at the game, in section 516 when we saw someone warming up in the bullpen…couldn’t think of who it could be.  The whispers began around the dome, “Is that Cliff Pennington?” It sure was.  Cliff Pennington became the first position player to pitch in the playoffs…ever.  Pennington took the mound with two on and two out in the top of the ninth with the Royals ahead 12-2.  Even though he allowed two quick runs, he still ranked 4th out of the 6 pitchers the Jays needed to end the game…and his first pitch was 91 mph.  Not too shabby!
